RE: Weight concerns for our new TT

NCH- Please don't apologize. I so appreciate your honest opinion and thank you for your insights. We have not signed the papers yet but I spent countless hours researching TT's make/models and finally found the one that fits my family perfectly. Hubby isn't attached to his current truck and is not objecting to looking at a used 3/4 ton. We will hold off on signing anything and see if we can find a new TV that will safely handle the TT we want. If we can't find anything that fits our budget then I will be disappointed but I also firmly believe that (after much prayer) we have to trust that things will happen as they should. Thanks, again, for your response! Your attitude and response to what can't be good news is absolutely refreshing. Please let us know what you ultimately decide to do.........and WELCOME to the group.

RE: Panic!!Rockets Flying!!My Rubber Roof?

After spending last New Year's Eve hosing down the roof to my trailer, I sent a PM to a forum member who has been at it a long time and whose answers I've always trusted. Primarily I asked him if my concern was justified. Here is his answer: "I would think the concern is genuine however it would take a "perfect storm" type event to do any real damage. Fireworks have been known to start grass fires when things are dry so they obviously can create enough heat to be dangerous to your roof but it would be a slight chance unless you have an excessive amount of them being shot off in your area. It does sound like keeping the roof wet would be a good idea in that case. Another possible way of protecting it might be parking under trees or using a canvas tarp on the trailer and wet IT down but at least it sounds like you're on top of what is needed." I DEFINITELY had an "excessive amount" being shot off close to my house last New Year's Eve, however it wasn't nearly as bad this July 4th. Since I was going to be home anyway, I went ahead and wet down the roof just in case a "stray" found it. I especially liked his idea of wetting down a canvas tarp in that one wouldn't have to stay home to "babysit' the trailer on holidays. It also occurred to me that I could use one of those sweeping sprinklers that hooks to a garden hose and water the grass and the roof of my travel trailer at the same time. Not a good idea in the winter if it is below freezing.....which it seldom is here. I don't object to the fireworks - just want to protect my roof.

RE: Going alone (gulp)

I'm a 62 year old grandmother who has mostly traveled alone since buying my trailer a little over four years ago. Most trips are within a few hours of my home in Louisiana, however I've made three trips to the Southwest, the longest of which was for six weeks. Clearly there were things to learn before setting out, but trust me, there is nothing about any of it that requires brute strength. Why, I even figured out that I needed to hook up the sewer hose BEFORE pulling the blackwater tank release valve.:R

RE: what did you name your dog and why

I have one that I named Mesa because she found me in a remote part of Arizona near a beautiful mesa about seven years ago. She knew she belonged to me before I did - just couldn't leave her behind when it came time to go home. My other dog, Gizmo, was already named when I inherited her from my daughter. She does look a little bit like the Gremlin, but I suspect it has more to do with her personality.

RE: Suggested Campgrounds in Utah and Colorado

I spent a week at Spanish Trails campground in Moab, Utah and did Canyonlands NP, Arches NP, and Dead Horse Point State Park. It is a few miles south of Moab, nothing fancy, but with full hook-ups and convenient for me since I was coming from the south. I was able to avoid driving through Moab with all of the street construction that was going on the summer I was there. They do have a web site. There were several other very nice campgrounds near the Colorado River on the northern side of Moab. You can probably find information about them by doing a search on the Campgrounds, Resorts and Attractions forum. I actually like to make Lake Powell in Page, Arizona home base and take day trips to Zion, Bryce, the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, Canyon de Chelley, Antelope Canyon, and Monument Valley. It is a beautiful 2 hour drive to each from Page, in different directions, of course. Wahweap Campground in Glenn Canyon Recreation Area has full hook-ups and a beautiful view of Lake Powell. For a real treat take the "less traveled" Cottonwood Road from Page to Bryce. I much prefer finding a beautiful spot and doing a bit of driving rather than hitching up and moving every few days.

RE: Looking for Eco-Friendly TT

If, in fact, "the least amount of formaldahyde gas causes her severe respiratory distress" I think you are going to be forced to find a manufacturer that uses none at all. Sounds as if anything less would be taking a chance. My trailer is four years old, and on a really hot day when it has been closed up, I can still get a whiff of formaldahyde. Someone mentioned the Oliver. I have no idea about the use of formaldahyde in the Casita or the Scamp, but they are also fiberglass, so you might wish to inquire about them also. Your need to sleep four comfortably may be the problem with the fiberglass trailers.

RE: running a/c in warm humid weather question

I live in Louisiana where it is very hot and VERY humid during the summer. I don't open a vent nor have I ever heard of doing so. In fact, I always put those foam pillows into my vent openings. If you have no shade, it will also help to put those reflective covers over your skylights and windows facing the sun. Stay cool, firedude. I'm not a fulltimer, but I always enjoy your posts.

RE: How small is your rig while full timing?

I met a couple at a state park last weekend who had been fulltiming since April in a 17' Casita that appeared to be new. His only comment was,"Well, all I can say is that you'd better love the one you're with." They seemed to be having a good time, but wish I could run into them again NEXT April to see how they were doing.

RE: Newbie Generator Question

As someone once said about the generators you listed, "I wouldn't kick any of 'em out of my truck." I have the Honda 3000 and like it very much. It runs everything including my A/c and it does it quietly. A disadvantage of the 3000 is its weight, as I certainly can't lift it by myself.....however, its weight is also an advantage in that the lone casual thief couldn't pick it up and trot off with it either. Again, no bad choices among those you listed.

RE: 7-Way Connector Wire Severed

From someone who completely severed her trailer cord not once but twice, just go ahead and have it replaced. A friend spliced mine and then used Shrinkwrap on it the first time, but I was always afraid I would be off somewhere and have a problem at the least convenient time. Sure enough, I had to have it replaced after a couple of months. After that I kept the cord fastened up and out of the way of the hitching mechanism with those heavy plastic ties, however they get brittle and break after a while......That's how I ended up cutting it the second time. I now make checking the cord position part of my hitching routine.

RE: Travel Trailer Brake Issue

Had an almost identical problem recently that turned out to be a short in ground wire to the trailer brakes.

RE: Can I connect rv to house power?

Back in my just starting out days, I was asking the same question. I got the adapter but when I tried to run the A/C, it would blow the fuse after a few minutes. Someone on RV.net suggested that I plug it into the same circuit with the washing machine. I did and it hasn't blown a fuse since. Something about that circuit not have other things on it and also being able to carry more load. The only time I really run the A/C at home is when I am getting the trailer ready to leave. On the few occasions that I've needed to run it all night, I've used my pretty red generator.

RE: ...Blue Bell ice cream from Texas....

I used to drive across the border into Texas to get it back before they started selling it in Louisiana. It's THAT good, especially the homemade vanillia. A couple of years ago I met a family at a campground who was just returning from the Canyonlands of Utah.......where I was headed. They said they'd had a great time but were ready to get back to "Bluebell Country."

RE: Does This Tool Exist?

I use the other end of my awning tool. I slip one side of the valve handle into the circle and pull straight out gently (to keep from bending) with both hands. I'm sure there is something better, but this is what I've done to keep from getting down on all fours each time. Actually getting down is not the problem.......It's getting back up.:(

RE: Dumping grey water holding tank

We do our dishes in a plastic basin and dump the water down the toilet when we don't have a sewer connection. That will help some since the black tank always fills up slower than the grey. I do this also when I'm trying to conserve grey tank space. Another thing I do is to catch the water that runs while I am waiting for it to run hot in a container and use it for the next flush. Those two things, along with taking showers at the bathhouse, help a great deal. One of my biggest surprises when I first got my trailer was how quickly the grey tank fills.

RE: Travel Trailer Ranking

I am in total agreement with MFinCA about the importance of a good dealer nearby. Other things being relatively equal, I would let that be my deciding factor. Regardless of how much you pay, there will be things all along that need attention. It's just the nature of these toys. Having a good dealer and service department nearby has been such a help.

RE: Amazing! Now it's happened to us!

"A TT is a fragile home"...........Well said, Sir Buffalo. Permission to use that phrase, please? There are just so many little mistakes that can be very costly to repair. I know because I made some of them before I learned.

RE: Happy Father's Day To Me!

Can't think of a better way to spend time with your family than camping. Take lots of wonderful trips with your children now because you will look up sooner than you can fathom and they will be grown..........but don't despair because then you get to take grandchildren camping.:)

RE: Amazing! Now it's happened to us!

Soon after I got my little travel trailer, a sweet young friend told me that their family of four might like to rent it for a week some time. I told them that it would not be necessary for them to rent it and suggested instead that I take their new party barge for a week while they took my trailer. The look on her face said it all. The thought of me trying to launch their new boat clearly put things in a different light.........'cause she knew I didn't know a thing about floating a boat. It was never mentioned again, and we are still very close. I don't think people realize what all is involved in managing the systems. I certainly didn't know before I got my trailer. I have offered to let my son use it IF he was willing to take the time to learn the systems. So far he has indicated that doesn't want to take a chance on something happening to it while he had it.
